Phones work on the affiliative principle. In this regard not much has changed from the original phone call in which Mr. Bell summoned Mr. Watson (or for that matter, since Tommy Tune crooned of 867-5309/Jenny). Did you know that the American Sign Language sign for telephone is the universal pinky/thumb extension gesture that resembes the "Hang Loose" hand signal of surf-dom? And that the sign for "play" is two telephones? And the more you shake those two phones side to side the more playful!?! So, pickup the telephone - it's for you. 

Click here for a great Youtube video on the inventions that have come out of the National Treasure formerly known as Bell Labs.  There is still a Bell Labs in Murray Hill New Jersey - but it's not quite the fount of innovation it was when American Telephone & Telegraph ruled the telephony roost.  Now there is Lucent, Alcatel, Lucent/Alcatel and who knows who.  Arguably, the busting up of the telephone trust fueled the wireless revolution (by enabling it to capitalize on the Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum technology invented by Viennese beauty-actress Heddy LaMarre - so it's all good.  How we went from trust busting to "too big to fail" is a whole 'nother story.


True Confession - I was an iPhone skeptic: Now I have an iPhone 4 - it's a true force multiplier and I am a zealous convert. I listen to tunes on mountain bike treks while powering up hill and dale. A phone call breaks in. Gf is delayed shopping. I can now go the extra mile! How about those 35 Twitter accounts I can manage without logging in and out? I stop along the trail. Snap a pic and immediately broadcast it to my Twitter legions. Get the picture? I could go on ...
